Police raids GNLA camp

TURA, March 19 - Acting on a tip off, police raided a temporary hideout of militants suspected to be from Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in the remote village of Makriadap in Kharkutta block of North Garo Hills yesterday.

According to police, an operation was planned after information was received on the presence of about five-six GNLA cadres holed up near the village. Meghalaya police along with CoBRA personnel launched the operation yesterday. On seing the police the militants opened fire forcing the police to retaliate.

The exchange of fire lasted for a few minutes after which the militants escaped taking advantage of the rough terrain and dense jungles.

Police, however, recovered arms and ammunition left behind by the fleeing GNLA militants.

An SLR along with 18 rounds of ammunition was later recovered from the spot. There were no reports of any casualties from either side.
