GUWAHATI, Sept 29 - The Gauhati University Teachers� Association (GUTA) has condemned the police raids inside the campus of Manipur University on the midnight of September 20, and the subsequent arrest of six teachers and several students of the university.
The GUTA said in a statement here today that it is opposed to any move to engage police and security forces to intervene in the internal matters of the academic institutions. GUTA upholds the democratic practice of resolving all contentious issues through amicable dialogues.
It has expressed serious concern over the emergency-like situation at Manipur University and in Manipur as well due to the excessive deployment of security forces and the authorities� inept handling of the democratic protest of the Manipur University Teachers� Association (MUTA), the Manipur University Students� Union (MUSU) and the Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA).
GUTA has urged the Manipur government to immediately release the arrested teachers and students of Manipur University and to initiate urgent steps to resolve the existing crisis through amicable dialogues involving all the stakeholders.
It has also expressed its concern at the state of affairs at several north-eastern universities, where the authorities concerned have put the academic environment at stake due to their lackadaisical attitude or are not acting as per the rules and conventions of their respective academic institutions.
It has stated further that the �ideologically surcharged political interference� has also thwarted free thinking in the universities and institutions of higher learning that should be widely discussed and debated upon by the academia.
