Police probing racket behind baby abduction

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 7 City Police, following the arrest of an ASHA worker who allegedly absconded with a three-day old girl and later sold her off, is now probing the involvement of more persons behind the incident. Already, city police has zeroed in on the names of two women, including the ASHA worker.

Sources in the police department informed that they have found clues indicating that the case reported with the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) could just be the tip of the iceberg.

It needs mention here that a three-day old girl went missing from the maternity ward of the GMCH a few days back and was later sold off to another person allegedly by an ASHA worker.

The child was rescued from Panikahiti area on Tuesday.

We are now contemplating reviewing the recent cases of child abduction or cases of similar nature. It appears that a well-oiled racket is behind such activities. The investigation is on and we are scouting more concrete clues, sources stated, adding that more arrests in this case is likely.

A senior official of the Criminal Investigation Department, when asked, replied that incidents of missing minors and adults are increasing and most of the cases remain unsolved.

The success rate of police in tracing the missing people is very low. Strangely, a large number of cases are reported as missing and later on it turns out to be either a case of trafficking or kidnapping, he rued.

He endorsed the need for a well-connected mechanism amongst the police and NGOs in all the States, especially the metros where young boys and girls are trafficked in large numbers.
