Police pick up 91 persons as part of security drive

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Sept 17 - Chandmari police last night picked up as many as 91 persons from Bhaskar Nagar and Maila Tanki localities of the city to verify their antecedents.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Chandmari) Putul Chandra Baishya said, All the 91 persons are engaged in petty jobs in the city and reside in rented accommodation. Along with them we have also summoned around 40 rented house owners to the police station. Interestingly, none of those rented house owners were able to provide proper information about their tenants. It is a very worrying sign which might pose a serious challenge when it comes to maintaining law and order in the city.

The detained people are mostly from Dhubri, Goalpara, Darrang and Barpeta districts and as informed by the ACP, most of the miscreants involved in various crimes that took place in the city in the past few days, belong to this section of people.

Among those detained, five were subsequently arrested after verification of their identities and sources of livelihood. The arrested five are: Amjibur Rahman from Mangaldoi, Aksed Ali from Kalgasia, Rinku Ali from Guwahati, Sun Mahammad from Hajo and Sahajuddin Mandal from Goalpara.

Today we strictly asked all those rented house owners to submit the credentials of their tenants at the earliest. To expedite the process, earlier we had also held some awareness meetings and distributed the prescribed forms too. But they showed no interest in carrying out their duty as responsible citizens. After last nights operation many rented house owners today approached us to collect the necessary form, ACP Baishya added.
