Police officer charged with causing injury

GUWAHATI, Nov 30 - Charges were framed against Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Amitava Sinha by the Court of Additional District Judge, Guwahati, today for allegedly causing grievous injury to an accused to extort confessions in police custody.

Sinha is also charged for extorting confessions during custody from a murder accused.

Sinha is now facing charges under Section 326 and 331 of the Indian Penal Code.

The case relates to alleged torture of�Gurmeet Singh, a murder accused, who was arrested from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the murder of businessman Jeet Singh, reported under Basistha Police Station in 2012.

It was also alleged that Sinha, who was then the Additional SP (Crime) along with an IPS officer warned the accused (Singh) of dire consequences.

Advocate AK Bhuyan appeared on behalf of Singh today. The murder took place in 2012 and Gurmeet Singh was arrested in 2013.
