GUWAHATI, Oct 19 - Police has been given free hand to take stern action against anyone found to be involved in corruption in any department and in recruitments. There will be no political interference in the process of investigations, asserted Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, the Chief Minister admitted that the scam in the examination for recruitment of Sub-Inspectors is very unfortunate, but at the same time, he lauded the police for nabbing those involved, including a police officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police, within a short period of time. He said that his message to the police was very clear and instructions were given to ensure that stern action is taken against anyone involved in the scam. He appreciated the role played by Director General of Police BJ Mahanta, Additional DGP (Law and Order) GP Singh, IGP, CID, Surendra Kumar and the entire team of police personnel involved in the investigation of the case and said that around 60 persons were arrested in less than a month after the scam came to light.

Sonowal said that instructions have been given to all the departments to make the recruitment process transparent and error-free. He pointed out that the State Cabinet has also taken a decision not to hand over the process of holding of examinations to any private agency. From now on, the examinations for any recruitment will be conducted either by the concerned departments themselves or the job will be given to the universities of the State, he added.

Sonowal said, it is very unfortunate that an officer of the rank of SP was involved in the recruitment scam. But one should not blame the entire police department for the same.

He pointed out that in the last few years, the police did very well in investigation of several major cases and a good number of criminals were convicted. In the case relating to the murder of Dr Deben Dutta in Jorhat, as many as 25 persons were convicted and that happened because of proper and timely investigation by police, he added.

Sonowal said that since he assumed office as the Chief Minister, he tried to ensure that there is no interference in any of the investigations by police as a result of which, the performance of the police improved. The police-public relations also improved and people are now not apprehensive of coming to police stations to register cases.

The Chief Minister asserted that zero tolerance policy on corruption would continue and efforts have been made to strengthen different wings of the Assam Police, including Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offences, Chief Ministers Vigilance Cell, etc.

Sonowal also revealed that a national level police academy is being set up in Dergaon and police personnel from other States of the country would also be able to receive training in the academy.
