Police foils picketing at Silchar railway station during Barak Bandh

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, Nov 22: Around 30 picketers were picked up by police from Silchar Railway Station as they assembled to stage a protest and blocked the outbound Silchar-Guwahati passenger train during Thursday's Barak bandh.

The 12-hour bandh has been called by the Paper Mills Revival Action Committee against the apathy of the government to reopen the closed Cachar and Nagaon mills, units of the government-run Hindustan Paper Corporation.

The picketers were taken from the station at around 6.55 am and kept in a makeshift jail at Chotelal Seth School.

The Silchar-Guwahati fast passenger and the Silchar Agartala train left for their respective destinations at 7.15 am and 8 am from the station.

Meanwhile, the streets of Silchar wore a deserted look with no public vehicles. Schools, colleges, shops and establishments were also kept closed.
