DIPHU, March 11 - Police resorted to firing in the air and baton charge to control an unruly mob at Harilal Basti here around 3:30 pm today.
Trouble started when thousands of beneficiaries, mostly from rural areas, who gathered at the hawkers centre for receiving free materials under a State government scheme, went berserk alleging erroneous distribution of materials by the officials. They damaged several parked vehicles and glass panels of the newly constructed building.
Police fired substantial number of shots in the air to disperse the stone-pelting crowd. One elderly lady received head injury in the ensuing stampede.
After the incident, senior civil and police officials visited the spot and pacified the agitated people.
