Police fire in air to disperse lockdown violators

BONGAIGAON, March 28 - Police fired several rounds in the air to disperse a mob at Bhawlaguri- Boudibazar under Bongaigaon Police Station on Saturday morning when they were trying to close the market to enforce the 21-day nationwide lockdown.

The shopkeepers and some local buyers of the market had turned into a mob and attacked the police, pelting stones and chasing it with sticks when the latter had told them to close the market.

The police then fired shots in the air to disperse the mob before more security personnel reached the spot, a local youth said. However, no casualty has been reported.

A case (284/2020) has been registered under against those who had attacked the police under relevant sections under IPC and the Disaster Management Act at Bongaigaon Police station and seven youths have been arrested in this connection, Bongaigaon SP Singha Ram Mili said and added that the situation is under control and peaceful.

Police is on the trail to nab the main accused of the incident, Anowar Hussain, whose bike has been seized from the spot, the SP said.

Meanwhile, the Bongaigaon administration has clamped CrPC Section 144 in the entire district from Saturday.
