Police failure to nab couple for inhuman act criticised

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Sept 4 - Amid public anger over the failure of police to arrest doctor Siddhi Prasad Deori and his wife Dr Mitali Konwar, accused in the barbarism involving a 12-year-old boy, the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) on Friday protested in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police to reiterate its demand for immediate arrest of the couple.

After the inhuman act of pouring boiling water on the child hogged media space, the public have condemned the role of police over their failure to arrest the perpetrators.

Police have so far arrested the son and daughter of the main accused. But the ATTSA and other organisations, including women and child rights groups, have demanded arrest and exemplary punishment to the main accused.

The ATTSA submitted a memorandum to SP Prateek Vijay Kumar Thube and demanded that police expedite their investigation. Police, meanwhile, have expressed confidence that they will soon get the duo arrested.

The case pertaining to the brutality on the minor was lodged by the districts Child Welfare Committee at Dibrugarh Sadar PS on August 31, 2020.

Dr Deori is former store in-charge of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and proprietor of the now defunct Jyotish Memorial Hospital. He also owned a hardly known Assamese daily called Dainik Bhumiputra, which ceased publication long ago. His wife Mitali Konwar is the principal of Moran College.

Doctor succumbs to COVID-19: Dr Apurva Rajkonwar, deputy superintendent of Lezai Kalakhowa Model Hospital and in charge of the Lezai Kalakhowa Covid Care Centre, passed away on Friday at the AMCH. Till filing of this report, the number of COVID-19 cases stood at 8,587 in the district.
