Police failure to arrest accused doctor, wife flayed

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, Sept 3 - Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) in association with several other local organizations and general public today stormed Dibrugarh Sadar PS in protest against the failure of the police to arrest Dr Siddhi Prasad Deori and his wife Mitali Konwar in connection with child labour and heinous crime like pouring boiling water on a 12-year-old domestic help.

ATTSA had set a 24-hour deadline for the administration yesterday to arrest the main accused Dr Siddhi Prasad Deori and co-accused Mitali Konwar. After police failed to arrest the couple, ATTSA staged the protest today. They condemned the police for their failure in arresting the accused couple.

Organizations and the general public here are enraged at the failure of the police to nab the accused. Although the police today picked up the son of the absconding accused along with his friend from Lahoal for interrogation, protesters demanded that police must arrest the accused couple.

It needs to be mentioned here that Dr Siddhi Prasad Deori is former Store in Charge of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and proprietor of the now defunct (closed down by the authorities due to irregularities) Jyotish Memorial Hospital. He also owned a hardly known Assamese daily newspaper called Dainik Bhumiputra, which has since ceased publication long ago. His wife Mitali Konwar is the Principal of Moran College. There are reports of demonstrations at the Moran College today, demanding penal action on her.
