Police collecting money illegally at check point: Jaintia body

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Oct 22 - A Jaintia Hills-based organisation has alleged that the Meghalaya Police has been collecting money illegally from motorists travelling through a particular stretch of road in the district.

The Khasi Jaintia National Union (KJNU) has filed a complaint before the Meghalaya DGP, asking him to take necessary action in this regard. The organisation claimed that money is being illegally collected at a check point set up by the Ummulong Police Beat House in West Jaintia Hills district.

KJNU president Niman Shadap said that an FIR was earlier lodged before the SP of West Jaintia Hills, but no action has been taken so far. So the organisation is seeking intervention from the DGPs office, he added.

The organisation claims that the check point has been set up at a bypass linked to the National Highway, which further connects the State to the rest of the North Eastern States.
