Police case lodged over fake message

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 2 - A police complaint was today lodged at Chandmari Police Station over a fake message which was circulated yesterday using a morphed page of The Assam Tribune.

In the FIR, it was stated that unscrupulous elements morphed the first page of The Assam Tribune edition dated April 1 to spread a fake news which seriously affected the credibility of the newspaper.

The fake news stated that former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had joined the BJP. The morphed first page of the forwarded message also had an old photo of a meeting between Gogoi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The morphed page was spread through the social media, which created confusion among the people, the FIR by the newspapers management stated, seeking proper investigation into the matter and booking of the culprits.

The case (192/19) has been registered under sections 120 (b), 468, 471, 420 and 204 of IPC. More sections are likely to be added, police said.

While several people claimed to have got the forwarded message on social media platforms, the source of the message could not be ascertained.

Senior police officials had also taken the matter seriously. It can be charged under various sections of the IT Act and other laws, a police official had said.
