GUWAHATI, Aug 30 � ASEB Sports Club stayed at the bottom half of the eight-team GSA Super League Football Championship this year playing a scrappy goal less draw against bottom-ranked Assam Police Blues.
After completing their preliminary round today, the former champions ASEB managed to collect nine points from seven matches and are placed at sixth position in the table.
On the other hand, the policemen, with today�s draw, have collected three points from seven outings.
Again the Police players have to blame themselves for not winning the match as despite enjoying distinct domination throughout the course they failed to score. They enjoyed about 70 per cent ball possession in the match but due to bad shots at the goal, which has been a regular feature for them, they had to play a draw.
The policemen got off to a promising start with a series of attacks. They had easy sailing to the goal area of the opponent. But after reaching the penalty box their strikers become clueless and spoilt all the opportunities with repeated misfires.
Police frontliners Sarbananda Sonowal, Mofidul Islam and Joseph Maslai got adequate support from their midfielders Kajaigek Rongmei and Lipson Sinar. But they could not capitalise on the scoring opportunities. Substitute Rajen Zoya and Karuna Gayari also came very close to scoring and despite finding an empty goal they failed to put the ball inside.
In the later part of the match, Karuna and Rajen squandered atleast five easy sitters among themselves from close ranges.
ASEB boys were not in great form today. In the first session, Sanatumba Sarma missed the target in the 26th minute after some good work by Wiliam Gangte and Sanjoy Boro. In the 30th minute, Syed Ansar spoilt another scoring chance.
In the second session, substitute Shyam Murah made a valiant effort in the 67th minute to beat Police custodian Kailash Das who, however, pulled off a splendid save.
In the 85th minute, off a counter attack, ASEB�s Sagaar Hang Limbu tested Kailash with a sharp grounder but it went straight to the goalkeeper.
Now in the relegation group, both the teams have to work hard in order to avoid demotion. In comparison to ASEB, Police are more in the danger zone and have to sharpen their striking skills.
Defenders of both the teams looked better in comparison to their other departments. So, both the teams must work on the midfield and frontline.
