JORABAT, July 8 - Assam Police blocked entry of all kinds of vehicles from Meghalaya to Assam through Jorabat for many hours from the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. This resulted in a chock-a-block National Highway-6 for a long time.
As per sources, vehicles laden with vegetables and those bound for different states were however allowed to enter the State after senior Assam Police officials gave the nod this morning.
However, other vehicles bound for Guwahati and other districts of Assam were left stranded.
The action of the Assam Police threw the Meghalaya Police into a jittery, as the blockade on the highway barred movement of vehicles on essential duties too.
As per sources, the Meghalaya Police top brass took up the matter with their Assam Police counterparts, after which the barricade was removed and all vehicles were allowed to enter the State.
When asked about the reason behind the development, Jorabat Police Outpost in-charge Jugananda Boro said in a telephonic conversation, The reason is not known to us, but we acted as per an order from the DCP-East.
There has been apprehension that the action by the Assam Police might be a reaction to the issue concerning a COVID-related camp set up by Meghalaya Police on NH-6 in the 13th Mile area near Jorabat. The camp has allegedly been affecting the smooth movement of people of Assam travelling towards Byrnihat or other areas and also to Barak Valley districts through Meghalaya.
As per latest reports, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had also spoken to his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma on the issue.
