By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 23 With the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and various Unnayan Samitis demanding land patta threatening to disrupt the land patta distribution programme of the State Government to be held at the Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here tomorrow, police said that stern action would be taken against anybody who would attempt to upset the public order.

Police contended that as no permission has been taken by the organizations, any kind of protest would be held as illegal and necessary steps would be taken as per standard operative procedure.

Senior Superintendent of Assam Police (City) AP Tiwari said, We have made full-fledged 360 degree arrangement in apprehension of any untoward incident which might take place. We urge the people not to participate in any kind of protest as that would amount to violation of Sec 144.

He also stated that all necessary equipment, including riot control vehicles, would be stationed in the spot.

Earlier today, KMSS president Akhil Gogoi said that they will not allow the holding of the land patta distribution programme as it is against the cause of the landless people. We want the government to cancel the programme and sit with us for a meeting on the issue, Gogoi said.

Do not use the poor people as a poll plank. If something untoward happens tomorrow, the Chief Minister will be directly responsible for it, he said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is expected to distribute land patta documents to nearly 500 landless people of Guwahati at the programme.
