JORHAT, June 23 - State DGP BJ Mahanta on Monday said that police have acted promptly in the recent mob-violence incidents and have arrested the accused.

Mahanta, who chaired a meeting of police officials of various ranks posted at Upper Assam at the Jorhat Circuit House, later told newspersons in the evening that he told police officials that taking swift action in the recent incidents of mob attack was necessary and it was being done.

The challenge before the officials was to carry out investigation properly and prepare quality charge-sheets so that cases stand in court and guilty are punished, Mahanta said, adding that he asked the police officials in the meeting to prepare charge-sheets in cases in a quality manner without leaving any legal lacunae.

The DGP pointed out that in the recent cases of mob violence dedicated police teams were formed and charge-sheets prepared effectively and early.

Mahanta cited the case of Teok Tea Estate doctor lynching case of August 31 last year stating that it was investigated properly and a quality chargesheet prepared and filed within less than a month of the incident.

He said that due to Covid-19 pandemic, the result of Teok case had not come out otherwise police have done its part well.

Regarding the Mariani youth lynching incident (Debashish Gogoi) on May 29 last, Mahanta said that police were doing their job efficiently in investigating the case and the case diary will be of quality.

He said that the police investigation was in its last stage in the case and within a week the charge-sheet was likely to be filed in the court.

He also said that police acted promptly in the Chabua youth killing incident recently by arresting the accused immediately and now was working on preparing a quality charge-sheet.
