Poets arrest demanded

By Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, July 8 - The Tai Ahom Yuva Prishad (TAYPA) and the Tai Ahom Students Union( ATASU) here have expressed their ire against noted poet Nilim Kumar for allegedly publishing a poem in a leading Assamese magazine ridiculing Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom dynasty and Gadadhar Singha, the most valiant of the Ahom princes, as a driver and a handyman of a city bus. The organisations alleged that the poem also depicts Queen Kamala Konwari ridiculously.

Both TAYPA and ATASU lodged an FIR at Sivasagar PS on Tuesday against the poet allegedly for inciting ill feelings, communal hatred and demanded his arrest within 72 hours. The leaders of the organisations Diganta Tamuly, president, TAYPA and Jayanta Handique of the ATASU said that the Sonowal government could not arrest Garga Chatterjee and now if it fails to arrest Nilim Kumar, it will have to face the wrath of the youths of the community.

Talking to this correspondent, Diganta Tamuly, said that there has been a trend in various media in recent times to belittle the achievements of the great Ahom kings and the Ahoms as a whole in Assam and this incident ridiculing Chaolung Sukapha and Gadapani is a part of it and hence cannot be tolerated.

Asked as to what was their reaction when the poet tendered an apology and an explanation seeking forgiveness for inadvertently hurting the sentiments, Tamuly said that it will be settled in the court of law as a case had been lodged.
