Poet Ujjwal Saikia passes away

DOOMDOOMA, Sept 4 - Noted Assamese poet of the Ramdhenu Age of Assamese literature and a retired Forest department employee, Ujjwal Saikia breathed his last after a prolonged illness at his residence at Milantirtha of Rupai Siding here yesterday. He was 83 and is survived by two sons and two daughters besides a host of relatives.

Born on May 21, 1936 at Budlabeta Tea Estate here, Saikia got inspiration from his maternal uncle and eminent Assamese writer and film director late Dr Bhabendra Nath Saikia and began to write poems since his student life. His two collections of poems titled Ejak Jonakir Jilmil and Aakou Natun Aviskar Hobo have been widely acclaimed. Poet Ujjwal Saikia had close ties with Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
