DIBRUGARH, May 22 � Environment and Forest Minister Etuwa Munda today said all those involved in causing harm to the rich bio-diversity of the State would be dealt with, with an iron hand.
�All unlawful activities like felling of trees, timber peddling, stealing of stones and other resources, killing of animals, birds and other creatures of the forests must stop,� Munda said while addressing a gathering as the chief guest at the International Day for Biological Diversity function held at the Jeypore Reserved Forest IB ground.
Munda said that poachers, smugglers and all anti-environment people must know that the forest department too was equipped with guns.
The Forest Minister said maintaining the eco-system as also protecting the bio-diversity was essential for the entire humanity for sustainable development and healthy living. He called upon the people to plant trees and protect the environment for maintaining the ecological balance.
Munda said the forest resources belonged to the people of the State and hence it was the responsibility of every person to contribute towards conservation of the environment. He also stressed creating awareness among
schoolchildren and general public about the importance of preserving biodiversity.
The function was held under the aegis of the Assam State Biodiversity Board. The event was also marked by a photo exhibition and distribution of cheques of Rs 50,000 each to some thirty-seven biodiversity management committees of upper Assam.
The open session was presided over by Subhas Das, Additional Chief Secretary cum Chairman, Assam State Biodiversity Board. Deputy Commissioner MS Manivannan and Divisional Forest Officer P Terrang were among others who attended the programme.
