PMO seeks progress report

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Dec 14 With only 26 per cent of the targeted 50 per cent work being completed, the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) has called for an updated status report on implementation of the Gas Cracker Project.

The Gas Cracker Project is again likely to report missed deadline, as till November only 26 per cent against the scheduled target of 50 per cent of work have been executed. Last year, only 15 per cent of the targeted work could be completed, it has been learnt.

The issue has come to the notice of the PMO, which is regularly monitoring the progress and has recently asked the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers to update it about the progress of the work and reasons for the delay, sources said.

Accordingly, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC) in a recent letter to Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) has sought a status report on the progress of the work on Rs 5460 crore Project.

The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister has sought comments on the slow progress of the BCPL project. The BCPL has been requested to provide well-considered comments and views in connection with project management and implementing agencies on the progress of the BCPL project, said sources.

The PMO has already set up a delivery monitoring unit to review implementation of a select number of flagship programmes, including the Gas Cracker Project. The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, T K A Nair reviews the progress in execution of the project every quarterly.

Sources, however, maintained that the DCPC has been informing the PMO every month about the progress of the programmes in terms of the outcomes, targets and timeframes and tries to bring to its attention, any issues that may require resolution at a higher level, sources said.

The Gas Cracker Project was scheduled to be completed by 2012 but officials are sceptical over BCPL meeting its targeted date of completion.

As reported earlier, the Centre is tying all loose ends by firming up the administration and financial aspects.

The Department of Public Enterprise has moved a proposal to include two more directors in BCPL Board for smooth operation of the Company.

The DCPC had in September cleared BCPLs application for issue of project import certificate.
