AIZAWL, Dec 12 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Mizoram on December 16, official sources said today.

In his maiden visit to the State, the Prime Minister will formally commission the 60-MW Tuirial hydro electricity project during a public rally at Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl, the sources added.

State-owned engineering firm Bhel has constructed both the first and second unit of the Tuirial Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Mizoram a few months back.

Located at Kolasib district of Mizoram, the greenfield project of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) has been set up on the river Tuirial.

Power generation from Tuirial HEP will contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and contribute towards achieving a low-carbon development path for the nation.

Official sources said the Prime Minister will launch the project via satellite link from the venue of the public rally.

A meeting of top officials from different departments, chaired by chief secretary Lalmalsawma was held at Aizawl today to ensure security and other logistical arrangements for the visit.

The sources said that the Prime Minister would land at Aizawls Lengpui Airport on December 16, from where he will proceed to Aizawl via helicopter. Then, the PM will leave for Shillong the same day.
