SHILLONG, May 27 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off three trains remotely from here, including the first broad gauge passenger train services to Mizoram and Manipur.

The PM flagged off the Bhairabi-Silchar, Jiribam-Silchar passenger trains and the Kamakhya-Katra Express. Bhairabi in Mizoram was till date connected with a metre gauge, so too was Jiribam in Manipur.

But after the gauge conversion of these two lines, Jiribam and Bhairabi have now come under the broad gauge passenger railway map.

Modi said the Kamakhya-Katra train service would enable people from the region to visit Vaishnodevi. It is a red letter day for the people of North East. Manipur and Mizoram have been connected with broad gauge passenger trains and Kamakhya has been connected to Kashmir directly, Modi told a massive crowd at Polo Grounds here.

Emphasising on developing connectivity in the region, the PM said, the Government is opening up road and rail network of the region with the neighbouring countries. This, Modi said, would help development of the region.

Since the NDA came to power, Rs 10,000 crore has been spent on development of rail network in the region. This year, over Rs 5,000 crore has been sanctioned for developing rail network in the region. The objective is to connect all the Northeastern States through railways, he stated.

Earlier, speaking at the 65th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) Modi said the regional planning body needs introspection and re-orientation.

Informing that the Union Government has earmarked more than Rs 30,000 crore for the region, Modi said, the government has decided to continue the 90:10 assistance for core Central schemes and 80:20 for non-core schemes.

It should be our endeavour to ensure that this money is spent well for the development of the region. We believe in cooperative and competitive federalism.

The meeting was attended by Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight Northeastern States, besides Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jitendra Singh.
