PM begins two-day visit to State today

GUWAHATI, Feb 17 � Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will arrive in Assam tomorrow on a two-day visit, during which he will present the Fakruddin Ali Ahmed award to noted journalist MJ Akbar and review the implementation of the major Central Government schemes in the State.

Official sources said that the Prime Minister would arrive at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport here at 2.30 pm and inauguration of the auditorium at the Arya Vidyapeeth School, constructed with his MP�s local area development fund.

Dr Singh will present the Fakruddin Ali Ahmed award to MJ Akbar in a function to be held at the Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts at 4.30 pm. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today hosted a dinner in honour of the noted journalist today.

The Prime Minister will meet the Chief Minister and the members of his Cabinet at the Raj Bhawan at around 7 pm tomorrow to review the situation in the State. He will also review the progress of implementation of the Centrally sponsored schemes in the meeting. The Assam Government is likely to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister tomorrow and it was finalized in a meeting of the State Cabinet this evening.

Official sources said that on February 19, the Prime Minister would visit Rampur to inspect a scheme under the MP�s local area development fund before proceeding to Jorhat to lay the foundation stone of the National Institute of Design at 12.30 pm. After that programme, he will proceed to Sivasagar to lay the foundation stone of the Rajiv Gandhi Petroleum Institute. He will also address a public rally in Sivasagar before returning to Jorhat, from where he will fly back to New Delhi on the same afternoon.

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements have been made for the visit of the Prime Minister and security personnel have already been deployed in the venues where he is scheduled to visit.
