Plethora of problems hits Dispur College

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, May 20 - Students of Dispur College, located in the heart of the city in Ganeshguri area, are unhappy over the lack of proper infrastructure, including a playground, a students hostel and an auditorium on the campus, and other problems like drinking water and traffic congestion.

According to Akash Nayak, president of the Dispur College Students Union (DCSU), during every occasion when the college needs to organise an outdoor game, they have to search for other playgrounds near the institute.

There is a small playground located inside our college campus, but it is so small that it can only host a badminton game. During our colleges annual sports event, we always search for large playgrounds nearby to organise football and other games, Nayak told The Assam Tribune.

On other issues and problems affecting the students, he said, Our college campus lacks adequate drinking water supply. It is a serious problem for the students especially in summer. The college authorities recently took some steps to address the issue, but we are yet to get any result.

Nayak said that as the college is located in the busy Ganeshguri area, traffic congestion is also a major problem for the students, especially during examination time.

Traffic congestion is a common scene on GS Road, and has led to loss of valuable time of our students. Our students face serious problems due to traffic congestion, especially during examination time. We have moved the traffic police over the matter. Moreover, we have no specific space to park our two-wheelers inside the college campus, he said.

The students are also lagging behind in getting their own hostel. For those coming from outside Guwahati who enrol in the institution, staying in rented houses remain the only option.

Construction of a students hostel has started and may be completed within two years. But it will not be adequate to accommodate all who need it. At this moment, our college also has no auditorium with large seating capacity. It has caused serious problem in holding any event. Moreover, the condition of the toilets is also very poor, the student body president said.

He also laid stress on holding of campus recruitment for students, which he said was necessary to mitigate the unemployment problem.
