Plea to review selection of assistant engineers

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - The Federation of Engineering Service Associations of Assam (FEDESAA) has urged the Secretary of the State Water Resources Department (WRD) to review the selection of assistant engineers in the Department and conduct afresh the selection process for appointing the assistant engineers.

In a letter to the WRD Secretary, the Federation has alleged that the selection committee set up for the purpose considered the candidates acquiring engineering degrees through the self-study or distance education mode for promotion to the posts of assistant engineers of the Department contrary to the stand of the Department of Higher Education of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Directorate of Technical Education of the State on the issue.

The Federation said that the selection committee selected 12 junior engineers for promotion to the rank of assistant engineers. The institutions from which eight of these candidates obtained their BTech degrees do not have requisite approval of the AICTE.

Moreover, the Joint Secretary (Distance Learning) of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development had also, through a letter, instructed withdrawal of permission granted to various institutions to conduct BTech/BE programmes through distance mode.

The Deputy Controller of Examinations, Directorate of Technical Education, Assam, in an RTI reply, has also stated that any technical degree acquired through distance education mode is not valid, said the Federation to justify its stand on the issue.
