GUWAHATI, Aug 18 Expressing concern over the State Governments negligence on preservation and beautification of the Sarania Hill, Aamar Samaj, Asom, a socio-cultural organisation has demanded that the Government should ban major construction projects on the hill.
At a time when the entire world is worried about global warming and depleting green cover, we must take some concrete measures to protect our hills and forests. In Assam also, awareness is being created over the issue of global warming, but we are doing little to protect our green surroundings, said a statement.
The organisation also alleged that the State Government has given clearance to a major construction project, which would be used for commercial purpose.
Against the public sentiments, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has given permission to construct a huge building on the Sarania Hills to a non-Assamese trader, which, indeed is a ploy to destroy the environment and scenic beauty around the Gandhi Mandap, alleged chief advisor of the organisation, Dayananda Pathak, and its chairman Hiren Chandra Kalita.
It also asked the State Government to take immediate steps to preserve the hill and beautify it properly, so that common people of the city can enjoy its natural beauty.
