Plea to declare flood-induced erosion as a national problem

GOALPARA, Sept 3 - The Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a dharna in support of their pending demands in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s office here on Monday.

The CPI members submitted a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner and shouted slogans demanding adequate relief and compensation to all the flood- affected people numbering around 50 lakh in the state.

They also demanded that the problem of flood and erosion be declared as a national problem and sought immediate restoration and reconstruction of roads and bridges affected by the floods, besides construction of school buildings destroyed and washed away by the devastating flood waters.

Other demands mentioned in the memorandum were arrest of price rise of essential commodities and elimination of middlemen from the distribution chain in the market, providing adequate compensation and free seeds to the flood-affected farmers, providing free medical aid in the interior and rural areas of the district, adequate steps to be taken for prevention of Japanese Encephalitis and for immediate revival of the now defunct Jagiroad Paper Mill under the Hindustan Paper Corporation and Ashok Paper Mill at Jogighopa.

The CPI also demanded immediate draining out of rain water from the underpasses at railway crossings, steps to reduce man-animal conflict, allotment of land pattas to all the tribal people, especially those belonging to the Rabha and Garo communities and providing government pension to all the people over 80 years of age.
