By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 15 The Producers Council along with the Assam unit of BJP Art & Cultural Cell, has demanded of the Central Government to convert Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati into a 24x7 Assamese digital satellite channel.

A delegation of the Producers Council and Assam unit of BJP Art & Cultural Cell met the Secretary to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting at the All India Radio here and submitted a memorandum regarding various issues related to the Doordarshan in Assam.

The other demands in the memorandum include release of funds for North-East commissioned programmes of Doordarshan for the financial year 2014-2015 and empanelment of private producers for North-East commissioned programmes of Doordarshan. A host of people, writers, directors, actors, technicians, equipment suppliers and entrepreneurs are earning their livelihood from the North-East commissioned programmes.

According to a functionary of the Council, funds for the last three financial years, i.e. 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 were not released to the producers of the North-East by the Central Government.

The empanelment of producers for commissioned programmes expired on November, 2012. The empanelment of producers is a time consuming procedure and requires very careful handling in selection of genuine, honest and experienced producers who can produce good results, said the functionary, adding that the registration of producers for empanelment has to be done centrally.

The Council insisted on early notification for empanelment of producers.
