Plea to construct flood-ravaged Laguabora-Burabhakat Road

By ANN Service

DHEMAJI, Jan 6 - The people of Ajuha Gaon Panchayat in the western part of the district under Dhemaji Revenue Circle have expressed strong resentment over non-construction of the dilapidated link road from Ghuguha-Ghilamara PWD road connecting Naruathan-Burabhakat PWD road at Burabhakat village since a long time now, which has obviously created a lot of problems for regular commuters in this surface communication stretch as the haggard local people have been compelled to cross three broken bamboo bridges during their day-to-day journeys.

It may be mentioned that the 4 km long Laguabora-Burabhakat Road was constructed in 1986 during the first tenure of the AGP government. It was badly damaged by the devastating floods of the Brahmaputra in 1996. The flood waters washed away two big portions of the road, thereby creating two big ponds.

However, it is a matter of great regret that no successive governments have so far cared to reconstruct nor repair the road till date. Hence, it has remained in a dilapidated state and is as good as unserviceable, dotted with numerous crater-sized potholes and two big breaches created by the flood waters along with the bare river portion on the Dulung river on the road.

As a result, commuters on this stretch have been silently suffering a lot. The inhabitants of Chengamari, Laguabora and Khangia Sapori villages who have to traverse through this road daily have to cross three ramshackle bamboo bridges.

School-going children who study at Dulimer Higher Secondary School located at Burabhakat village are the worst sufferers as they have to go to their alma mater daily after suffering silently.

It may be mentioned here that almost every monsoon season the bamboo bridges made by the local people on the thee portions of the road are damaged by floods generated by Jiadhal river, which are then again repaired by the local people at their own cost.

It may be noted that the Laguabora-Burabhakat Road is the only surface communication stretch by which to reach Ajuha Gaon Panchayat office for the people of several villages like Chengamari, Laguabora etc.

On the other hand, it is the only direct connection for several interior villages of the area with Habung, the second capital of the Ahom kingdom founded by Swargadew Siukapha on the north bank. Yet the authority concerned along with the public representatives have not paid any attention to improve this important road for years on end.

As told by the people of the locality, during the time of every election, the candidates approach them for their valuable votes and promise to solve the basic problems of the area. In case they win the election, they invariably forget their pre-poll promises.

Under the circumstances, the local people have demanded the PWD authority, local MLA Dr Ranoj Pegu and MP Pradan Boruah to accord priority to re-construct this road as early as possible for the convenience of the people of this backward area.
