GUWAHATI, Nov 3 - Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Debabrata Saikia has made an appeal to the Chief Minister to take steps for covering all the additional areas of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) under the eviction drive to free them of human occupation as per the directive of the Gauhati High Court.

He also pleaded for adequately compensating those families who were evicted from the Deochurchang, Bandardubi and Palkhowa areas, besides setting up schools and Anganwadi centres for education of their children and prayer halls for the members of those families without any delay.

In a letter to the Chief Minister here on Wednesday, Saikia said that the Gauhati High Court has asked the State Government and the Deputy Commissioners of Golaghat, Nagaon and Sonitpur districts to take immediate measures to free the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th additions of the KNP from human encroachment, besides Deochurchang, Bandardubi and Palkhowa etc., areas.

But the eviction drive was launched only in the Deocharchung, Bandardubi and Palkhowa areas, without touching the areas under the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th additions of the National Park. This has resulted in severe resentment among various circles. These circles have described this act of the government against a section of the indigenous people as partial, reactionary, politically motivated and inhuman, said Saikia.
