Plea not to give inciting comments

By ANN SERVICE

BAIHATA CHARIALI, July 11 - Although the work of NRC update is going on as per the direction of the Supreme Court but a section of people of vested interest is always trying to make people of Assam confused by distorting the actual aims and objectives of the NRC update process in the State, said Kishore Kumar Bhattacharya, spokesperson of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in a workers meeting of the party held at Kamalpur recently.

Interacting with media persons, Bhattacharya said that in 1960, during the time of then Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, a tense situation developed in the State following the Assamese and Bengali language issue. During those critical days, Dr Bhupen Hazarika and Hemanga Biswas formed a peace mission with an aim to re-establish peace and harmony between the Assamese and Bengali community.

The peace mission started its drive with songs and music from Shillong and later it was extended to Guwahati, Nagaon, Jorhat and other parts of the State. Recalling the contribution of those two persons, the APCC spokesman called upon the Bengali community of the State to refrain from giving any inciting comment, which may break the bond of peace and fraternity between the Assamese and Bengali communities on the eve of publication of the NRC complete draft in the State.
