Places of worship in Meghalaya to reopen today

By STAFF Correspondent

SHILLONG, Sept 30 - Places of worship in Meghalaya are all set to reopen tomorrow by following all health SOPs and protocols laid down by the government.

General secretary of Shillong Muslim Union Sayedullah Nongrum said that instructions have been given to all mosques to follow the health SOPs and other guidelines.

He said apart from following the SOPs, the mosques will also have to collect the phone numbers of the devotees who will come to offer prayers, and provisions will be made for washing hands with soap and warm water. The faithful have also been instructed to bring their own Jai Namaz (prayer rug). We will also ensure that there is no overcrowding, Nongrum said. There are around 99 mosques in the State, including 13 in the State capital.

The Central Puja Committee (CPC) has said that instructions have been issued to all temples to follow the SOPs and guidelines.

CPC general secretary JL Das said, All mandir committees and Hindu religious places in Meghalaya have been requested to reopen by strictly following the SOPs recommended by the government.

Reverend WC Khongwir of Presbyterian Church, Jaiaw said the church is trying to chalk out a plan for reopening. He, however, added that it would not be possible to reopen the church immediately as there are several issues to be considered.

Maybe next week we would reopen as we are a big church with over 2000 faithful. We want to fully ensure that the Government protocols are not violated and the health and safety of the faithful are not compromised, the priest said.
