SILCHAR, June 14 - If the words of the newly-elected MP from Silchar Dr Rajdip Roy is to be believed, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is not happy with the execution of waste management in Silchar.
Sharing his thoughts with mediapersons at the BJP�s district office on Thursday, Dr Roy said that in its recent verdict, the NGT has expressed dissatisfaction over the waste management mechanism of a number of cities in the country, including Silchar. It has issued certain instructions to the cities not meeting the standards of waste management system and hence, following a meeting with all the MLAs and district administrations, it was decided that a pilot run of Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) scheme on waste collection and reuse would start soon in some selected municipal wards here.
�The pilot project under SLRM will start in ward nos.1, 2, 3, 4, 24 and 27 wherein collection will take place on a 12-hour basis in special tricycles coming from Punjab. The wastes would be segregated into solid and liquid formats. The wastes collected would be brought to the BRTF building as the centre identified by the Government under Swacch Bharat Mission.
If this pilot drive is successful, we might not have to dump the wastes at the Meherpur trenching ground which is in a bad shape now. There are plans to construct a waste management centre at the dumping yard in the coming days,� the MP mentioned.
Further, reiterating his wish list to work on strengthening the five highways, education and health sectors to accelerate the pace of development in Barak Valley, Dr Roy said that he will sit in talks with the Minister of Human Resource Development and pursue him to visit Assam University Silchar soon.
�Our University needs to improve on its rankings and, hence, I would make efforts to bring the HRD Minister to visit the varsity and take stock of the ground realities,� he added.
Further, speaking about the steps taken regarding strengthening border areas, the MP said that a meeting was held between the district administration and the BSF personnel in which a few schemes have been identified as per the requirement of the BSF. The schemes meant for an area of 0-5 kms from the border area and the Health and Social Welfare departments have been instructed to conduct a survey on the suitability of the schemes.
Dr Roy, who would be taking oath as a parliamentarian during the 17th session of the Lok Sabha said that he will also make efforts to bring a neurosurgeon to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital to serve the patients of Barak Valley.
A member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Dr Roy severely condemned the recent attack on doctors in West Bengal urged upon Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to issue arrest orders of the culprits behind the murderous assault on the doctors.
Moreover, he reminded the commitment of the Government towards reviving the closed paper mills of the state and said that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has had talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.
He also assured that the Government will look in the areas in order to lessen the harassment meted out to the people in the name of verification of NRC documents.
