Pilot project of cyber dome functional

By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, Sept 4 - The pilot project of the ambitious cyber dome project of the Assam Police has started functioning and it is expected that at least a couple of years will be required to complete the entire project, which will give a major facelift to the facilities of the State police not only in dealing with cyber crimes but also to help the force to go for predictive policing based on thorough data analysis.

The Special Director General of Police (Special Branch), Pallab Bhattacharya told The Assam Tribune that the cyber dome project was conceived when the Digital India project was launched. He pointed out that cyber crime has become a major challenge for the police with more and more digital transactions. On the other hand, the anti national forces and militant groups have also been increasingly using the cyber space, which added a new dimension to the challenges faced by the police.

Bhattacharya said that though it would take two to three years to complete the entire project, the pilot project has started functioning. The pilot project covers areas like digital intelligence, technical analysis of the intelligence inputs, social media monitoring, cyber forensic etc. However, this is only one aspect of the ambitious project and steps have been initiated to complete the entire project.

The complete project will also include areas like research and analysis, data analysis, etc. Bhattacharya pointed out that after the completion of the project, the police would be able to go for proper predictive policing as data analysis of all the branches of the Assam Police would be of immense help for the law enforcing agencies. He said that after the complete project becomes operational, it would be easier to analyze the data of all the police stations and even of the branches of the police including border police, criminal investigation department etc. Proper research and analysis of the data is always beneficial for the law enforcing agencies to prevent crimes of all kinds, he added.

Bhattacharya said that an internationally reputed company has been entrusted with the responsibility of working as the consultant for the entire project management and a detailed project report is being prepared. The process of tendering and other aspects will be launched soon.

A few states of the country including Kerala and Maharashtra have already launched such cyber dome projects, while, Telangana has done it in a bit different way. The projects in different states may have slight differences but the basic idea is the same, that is to deal with crimes through the cyber space and to deal with threats to national security.
