PIL against DoT onprepaid re-verification

GUWAHATI, March 18 � Dainik Purvoday, a Hindi daily of Northeast, has filed a Public Litigation Interest against the Government in the Gauhati High Court on Friday espousing the cause of the large number of mobile prepaid subscribers of Assam and Northeast telecom circles, especially the underprivilege rural masses, who are hardest hit by the new security safeguard guidelines of the DoT issued under the instructions of the Ministry of Communications & IT, Government of India. This was stated in a press release.

�We have moved a petition in the High Court against the new guidelines issued by DoT on re-verification of pre-paid subscribers in Assam and Northeast telecom circle,� Utpal Kanta, economic editor of Dainik Purvoday, said.

�Subscribers of NE region have been made to suffer in the name of security, whereas a large numbers of States hit by Maoist/Naxalite activists, like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orrisa, Chhatishgarh and Andhra Pradesh, have been kept out of the purview of the secuirity guideline,� Kanta said.

Dainik Purvoday has accused DoT of not applying its mind in extending the re-verification guidelines meant for J&K in Northeastern States vide letter dated 30.07.2010.

The petitioner has therefore asked for a stay on the operation of the impugned letters/notifications dated 20.01.2010, 20.07.2010, 20.01.2011 issued by the DoT, added the release.
