Picnic, fishing banned at Deepor Beel

GUWAHATI, Jan 1 - The City Police has imposed two separate prohibitory orders in and around Deepor Beel banning picnic as well as community fishing, respectively, which may lead to damage to the ecosystem of the sanctuary.

The orders have been issued by Amitabh Basumatary, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Police District, Guwahati, under Section 144 of CrPC.

Picnic will not be allowed at the place during the month of January, as per one of the orders.

�� in the month of January, a lot of people from various parts of Guwahati city and adjoining areas go to the core area of the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary for picnic. This may lead to violation of law and order in that area� it is necessary to take preventive measures for maintaining law and order in that area as well as to protect wildlife and ecosystem of the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary,� the order stated.

It added, �� do hereby prohibit assembly of more than five persons in and around the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary for picnic. The order shall remain in force from January 1 to January 31, 2016.�

In another order, gathering of people for community fishing from today till January 7 has been prohibited.

�� some people from villages around and adjoining Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary, such as Keotpara, Mikirpara, Paspara, Azara, Tetelia, in tandem with people from various fringe parts of Guwahati city are likely to venture out to organise community fishing on January 3� such a venture is absolutely illegal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act,1972,which will also cause irreparable as well as irretrievable damage to the ecosystem of the sanctuary as presented by the Divisional Forest Officer, Guwahati Wildlife Division, Guwahati� It is necessary to take preventive measures to protect wildlife and ecosystem of the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary,� stated the order.

The order added: �� do hereby prohibit assembly of more than five persons in and around the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary for community fishing. The order shall remain in force from January 1 to January 7.�
