GUWAHATI, March 7 Expressing concern over the reduction in allocation under the MGNREGA to Assam, AGP MLA Phani Bhushan Choudhury today called upon the State government to take up the matter with Centre.

Taking part in the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the Governors address in the Legislative Assembly, Choudhury said that reduction in allocation will have serious impact on the State.

Now the State government is facing what our AGP regime had faced in 1985-90 and 1996-2001, he said, adding that in contrast to Assam, States like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have secured much higher allocation.

At a time when the allocation to MGNREGA in the Union Budget has gone up, the allocation to Assam has come down, he said.

He also expressed concern over the manner of implementation of the scheme in Assam.

While the number of job cards has increased in the last year, the number of mandays have come down, Choudhury said.

He also said that an amount of Rs 72.81 crore due to MGNREGA job card holders have not been released.

The AGP MLA said that there is also mismanagement in foodgrain distribution system targeted at the poorer sections in Assam and cited the example of sugar being not available under PDS since June 2013 and Antodaya rice costing more than the stipulated price of Rs 3 per kg due to transport subsidy not being transferred to cooperative societies.

He also alleged that there is discrepancy in the information provided in the Governors speech.

Choudhury alleged massive embezzlement in buying materials under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan and called for a enquiry into the matter.
