By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 21 - At a time when global crude oil prices have hit a record low, the State government has effected a modification of the rate of fuel tax that would hike the petrol prices in Assam by nearly Rs 6.

The finance (taxation) department issued the notification today, following which the rates would change from midnight.

Following the tax hike, the price of petrol will increase from Rs 71.61 to Rs 77.46 per litre, according to the dealers association. The price of diesel will be Rs 70.50 per litre up from Rs 65.07.

Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been indicating the poor state of State finances due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

He had also indicated that it would be difficult for the State to meet the June expenditure, including salaries of the government employees if there is no infusion of funds.

The State can impose taxes in only fuel or liquor.
