People urged to maintain peace, tranquility

By Shambhu Boro

DHEKIAJULI, Aug 18 - The situation in the Polashbasti-Oriontali area following Sunday mornings mob attack upon the villagers of near Arun Tea Estate under Dhekiajuli PS of Barchala LAC, after a quarrel between two intoxicated youths the previous evening is now normal, said the Additional SP, Sonitpur, Numal Mahatta.

Talking to this correspondent, he said that the police is keeping a close watch on the situation. Meanwhile, sources say, the incident was avoidable, and was caused only due to clashes between bootleggers.

This correspondent during a visit to the area on Monday morning found Rana Pratap Baruah, central committee president of the AJYCP and a permanent resident of the area urging both the sides involved in the clash to maintain peace and tranquility and restore the age-old ties of brotherhood between them.

He mentioned that over 70 Assamese families of Polashbasti-Oriontali area have been living in the area for the last seven decades surrounded by different communities including the Tea community and Muslim people showcasing an exceptional communal bonding. Celebration of different festivals including Bihu, bhaona, raas, Durga puja, Karam puja etc., together reflects how we live here respecting everyones feelings. Sundays incident has deeply hurt everybody and left us speechless. It is not a good sign for the society. Yet we are hopeful that there will be no further incident in the days to come as we will remain alert so that no element dares to break our unity.

Baruah said that there are some bootleggers dens in the area who openly sell illegal liquor in the area with the authority turning a blind eye thereby damaging the overall social environment of the area. Tragically, the growing children/teenagers who are considered as the future of the society, are the customers for these unscrupulous illegal liquor selling people. They are earning, but are destroying the society, which is an unpardonable act. Consumption of liquor supplied by a section of the youth can sometimes create chaotic situations as was witnessed in the area recently. Therefore, I am optimistic that the authority will be sensitive enough in dealing with the issue, at least in the greater interest of the restoration of goodwill among the common masses of the area, he said adding that in the incident 13 people sustained serious injuries, and many houses were damaged. He demanded that the government should make proper arrangements for the treatment of the injured and compensate their losses.

He also urged the Police and the Excise departments to take action against the unscrupulous businessmen running a racket of illegal liquor in the area damaging the social environment.
