People should strengthen Sabha: Dr Borah

GUWAHATI, July 10 - Urging the masses to strengthen the hands of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah, president of the State�s apex literary body, today said that everybody should be a part of the Sabha�s endeavour to act as a true representative of the region�s composite identity.

Addressing a gathering at the Hatigaon Navaroon Sakha Sahitya Sabha in the city, Dr Borah said that the Sabha needed cooperation of all the people of Assam for cementing the bond of unity and brotherhood amongst the diverse constituents of the State�s socio-cultural mosaic.

�We seek involvement of each and every citizen of the State as the Sahitya Sabha approaches the momentous occasion of its centenary. By becoming members of the Sabha, everybody can get attached to Assam�s national life,� he said.

The Asam Sahitya Sabha also acknowledged the exemplary role of the Hatigaon Navaroon Sahitya Sabha, which had recently added 140 life members, eight �Hitoishee Sabhya� and six �Hitoishee Suhrid Pariyal� to the Asam Sahitya Sabha by bestowing on the latter the title of �Satadal Sakha.�

The families of Maniram das, Krishna Rai Medhi, Dr Ilias Ali, Dipankar Rai Medhi, Anil Kalita and Nabin Sarma were formally honoured with the title Hitoishee Suhrid Pariyal on the occasion.

Litterateur Dr Ramesh Pathak and Krishna Rai Medhi were the distinguished guests at the function, which was moderated by Dipak Kumar Barman.

The Asam Sahitya Sabha is organizing a cultural workshop at the Bhagawati Prasad Baruah Sadan from 10 am to 2 pm from July 15 to 22. The workshop will have sessions on Goalporiya folk dance, Kushan dance and Kamrupi folk song. Folk artiste Arundhati Das will conduct the sessions. Interested participants have been asked to contact the Sabha office by July 12.
