Pension for farmers on State Govt�s radar

NALBARI, Dec 2 - The Vice-Chancellor of the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Dr Kamal Malla Bujarbaruah has said that the State Government is considering to formulate a pension scheme for the farmers of the State so that the new generation could be attracted to the agricultural sector.

Addressing a �Na-khowa Utsav� organised by the Nalbari Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) on Sunday, Dr Bujarbaruah said that he had a discussion with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on this issue. �I will also meet the Chief Minister to pursue the matter so that the farmers of the State are benefited�, he said calling upon the farmers to take up agriculture as a commercial venture so that they can get remunerative prices and are able to sustain their families. Dr Bujarbaruah also added that the AAU is going to implement two more schemes with financial assistance to be provided by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Central Government.

The programme conducted by Dr Mridul Deka, programme coordinator of KVK was also addressed by Dr Hemendra Bhattacharya, Director, Extension Education, AAU and Joycharan Haloi, a progressive farmer of the district. It may be mentioned here that the Nalbari KVK has been celebrating the traditional �Na-khowa Utsav� since 2010 with the selected farmers, staff and distinguished guests.
