Peace Award to Sharmila

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 � Irom Sharmila Chanu, human rights activist from Manipur who has completed ten years of her indefinite fast in protest against the draconian Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act has been declared the winner of the 12th Signature Women of Substance Award for Peace for her exemplary contribution in the field of peace and social development.

Litterateur Deepika Bhattacharya who has authored a number of books on history and travel besides over 50 children�s books was chosen for the Signature Women of Substance Award in Literature.

Singer Sudakshina Sarma who has enthralled music lovers of Assam for several decades with her golden voice was declared winner of the Signature Women of Substance Award for Culture.

Dr Lakshmi Goswami, social worker and physician who has been rendering yeoman�s service for the needy and the downtrodden in Tezpur and surrounding areas, especially in interior places, was the winner of the Signature Women of Substance Award for Social Service.

Entrepreneur Asha Borah who is known for her promotional activities in the manufacture of ethnic wear, shoes, etc., in the field of cottage industry was selected for the Signature Women of Substance Award for Entrepreneurship.

Informing this, a statement from the organisers said that the winners would formally be presented with the awards at a function at the Shilpgram near the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra at 4 pm on November 9.

The awards include cash, citations, bouquets and Signature Trophies. On the occasion, the 12th Signature Awards make-up and hairstyle competition will also be held where 105 models will showcase their talents.
