NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 14 - Padmashree Award-winning conservationist and brand ambassador of Clean and Green Village campaign in Assam, Jadav Payeng inaugurated a project in Lakhimpur district on Friday.

Popularly known as the Forest Man of Assam, Payeng inaugurated the Clean and Green mission by planting a sapling at Zoihing village, some 10 kms away from district headquarter North Lakhimpur.

Inaugurating the project, which aims to instil a sense of responsibility among the villagers for maintaining an eco-friendly environment, the internationally acclaimed environmentalist urged the local villagers to protect and promote the environment and ecology for ensuring a healthy future of the coming generation.

An awareness meet was held on the occasion at Zoihing Karam Bhawan which was organised by the district Public Health and Engineering Department. Addressing the public on the occasion, Jadav Payeng spoke on Clean & Green Village mission initiated by My Gov Assam.

He appealed to the public and younger people as well as the students community to save the environment from being destroyed by man-made advancements. He also asked them to inculcate the habit of planting one tree every day instead of spending much time and money for such things only on specific occasions.

Payeng, who has invited international recognition for single-handedly creating and selflessly nurturing a forest on a sandbar off the Brahmaputra near Jorhat, said there was no alternative to plantation in order to combat global warming and climate change.

Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr Jeevan B and My Gov Assam team member Deepjyoti Handique also attended the inauguration programme of Clean and Green Village at Zoihing.
