By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 11 - A rare congenital disorder known as Median Arcaded Ligament Syndrome (MALS) was recently diagnosed by the gastroenterology department of the Nemcare Hospital in a 17-year- old boy, who was suffering from pain in the abdomen for the last four years.

MALS is diagnosed during special CT scan of the whole abdomen i.e., Computerised Tomography Angiography of Abdomen (CT Angio). This disease can be diagnosed only by CT Angiography or MRI Angiography.

According to a press statement issued by the hospital, the patient visited several hospitals and was even admitted for treatment on a number of occasions, but to no avail. He was even given psychiatric medication as all previous investigations were within normal limits. He finally attended Nemcare Hospital, where the congenital disorder was diagnosed.

After laparoscopic release of median arcuate ligament, and a successful post-operative period, the patient was discharged and is doing well on normal diet, the statement further mentioned.
