By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, May 8 - In a major development which is sure to augment better education for the students, the State government has accorded financial sanction of Rs 5 crore to 50 notified colleges across the State for opening Science stream.

The letter, issued by the Directorate of Higher Education, informed that among the 50 colleges which would get Rs 10 lakh each as Science laboratory grants, Patharkandi College under Karimganj district too had been included for the facelift.

Expressing great joy, Dr Monjurul Haque, Principal of the college said that opening of the Science stream in the college will be a path-breaking event benefiting students of this far-flung part of Barak Valley.

This was a long-pending demand. It is a great feeling to see the government responding on a positive note. Our local MLA has made tireless efforts for the benefit of the students, Dr Haque said.

Meanwhile, talking to The Assam Tribune, legislator Krishnendu Paul said, I thank Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya for responding to the plea for financial approval to the college for starting the Science stream. This was a much-needed move since Patharkandi College is the only college in Karimganj district to be included in the list of notified colleges for the grants.

He was quick to inform that efforts are being made for opening the Commerce stream at Sonakhira Swami Vivekananda College and a model college at Bajarichora area of the constituency in the coming days.
