SILCHAR, May 8 Realising the need to facilitate the people in obtaining passports easily, local MP Susmita Dev has requested the Centre to set up a new passport office at Silchar.

In a letter to the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Susmita said that the present Passport Seva Kendra at Guwahati is 300 kilometres from Silchar and people have to experience immense difficulties in obtaining passports because of the poor road and expensive air connectivity. With the expansion of opportunities for education and business, the number of passport seekers is increasing each day. There is substantial increase in the demand for Passport Seva Kendra here so that the inconvenience is alleviated, she noted.

Susmita said the establishment of the new Passport Seva Kendra in Silchar would substantially reduce the distance travelled by the applicants from Barak Valley to the capital city.
