By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 5 - Welcoming the passage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill for introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), industry body Assam Chamber of Commerce (ACC) today said that it will have a positive impact for the market of Assam.

The Assam Chamber of Commerce welcomes the passing of the GST Bill in Parliament. The Assam Chamber of Commerce feels that the GST will have positive implications on the market of Assam and would benefit the common people as well as the business community of Assam. The implementation of GST will remove all the layers of taxes, which would be replaced by only one tax and would ultimately help in reducing price rise. The Assam Chamber of Commerce lauds the efforts put in by the government in passing of the GST Bill, Rupam Goswami, Chairman of ACC, said.

He stated that the implementation of GST will be the biggest economic reform of this decade.

The introduction of GST will completely halt the Sales Tax Inspector Raj. Many goods brought to be sold in the neighbouring States of Assam, are sold in Assam by some people performing corrupt business practices, as Assam has comparatively higher taxes than the neighbouring States, he said, adding that implementation of GST will check corruption at various levels and the unauthorised collections at check gates will be abolished resulting in reduction of prices of various commodities.

He pointed out that the average travel distance for a truck in India is 280km per day compared to 800km per day in foreign countries.

After implementation of GST, the check gates will be removed, facilitating the truck movement and reducing the truck expenses. This will have direct impact on the reduction of prices of various commodities, Goswami said.
