Parties intensify BTC poll campaign

By Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR, Nov 22 - With just a few days left for the much-awaited BTC election, political parties have intensified their campaign to woo the voters with lofty promises. The stalwarts of the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) and the United Peoples Party-Liberal (UPPL) have approached the voters with the promise of an all-round development in the BTAD areas. Similarly, the BJP, headed by senior leader and State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is trying to reach out to voters by introducing new schemes for the Boro people. Candidates of different constituencies are now engaged in house-to-house campaign to attract the electorate.

This year, the BTC election is likely to witness a multi-cornered contest. This can be gauged from the fact that the three major parties BPF, UPPL and BJP have been able to draw sizeable crowds in their respective election rallies. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has been trying to woo the voters by highlighting the misrule of BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary. He has assured that if the BJP is voted to power, the party will take the BTAD areas to a new height of development.

Another important development in the poll-bound region is that several senior BPF leaders have already started discussions with Dr Sarma to join the saffron party.

On the other hand, UPPL chief Pramod Boro has emerged as a strong leader in the BTAD areas. Other political parties, including Congress, AGP, AIUDF and CPI, have begun their campaign in their selected pockets to attract the voters.

Meanwhile, a section of voters are in a dilemma over taking active part in the poll process amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the COVID scene is improving gradually with the number of patients decreasing, some voters are still worried about the situation.
