Parrikar reviews lower Assam security scene

GUWAHATI, May 2 � On the second day of his visit to the Gajraj Corps Zone today, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, paid his maiden visit to the Rangiya-based Red Horns Division accompanied by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh, Lt Gen MMS Rai, GOC-in-C Eastern Command and Lt Gen Sarath Chand, GOC Gajraj Corps to review the security situation in lower Assam and to get a first-hand feel of the ongoing operations against the militant groups.

He was received by Maj Gen CP Mohanty, GOC of Red Horns Division. He was given a detailed briefing on the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in lower Assam, with a specific update on the current operations being undertaken against the NDFB(S) after its December 2014 violence against the Adivasis.

The minister appreciated the progress of operations and the efforts made by the formation to review and alter its tactics to counter the rapidly changing situation in the region.

Parrikar was specially satisfied with the citizen-friendly approach and empathy displayed by the Army while conducting operations and said if required more funds could be provided for Operation Sadbhavna to carry out welfare activities. He lauded the Army�s role in the violence-free conduct of BTC elections in BTAD, said an Army release.

Rijiju also lauded the successful conduct of operations by the Army and other security agencies post-December 23 violence.
